how to: look like a runner

by midwestern standards of athleticism, i was never much of an athletic kid. i don't blame this on my parents or the neighborhood kids that i was chased by. nope, i knew all the best hiding places to retreat to upon an engrossing game of capture the flag. but i knew how to look like an athletic kid.

yet, like any "normal," white, middle class suburban family, i was thrown on a little league baseball team*. however, that didn't last long, like the rest of my athletic endeavors.
my parents were even 'liberal' enough to let me try ice hockey**, karate, swimming, gymnastics***, track & field, and my mom even took me to a boy scout meeting at the local fire-station****

regardless of the sport, my parents always made sure i looked like i knew what i was doing. hockey, swimming, baseball. whatever. i looked like a pro in any circumstance. i remember mom went and dropped like +300 bucks on ice hockey equipment: the bag, the stick, the skates, the pads, the tape. i looked like a hockey player.  i was a hockey player...for a year.

anywho, my point is...

if there is one piece of advice i would give you, future athlete or runner or aspiring anything, i would say:
just look like you know what you're doing
even if you don't actually know completely what you're doing.*****

and by "look like you know what you're doing," just buy some obnoxious colored running shoes, short shorts, and a hat. even if you don't know what you're doing, people will start treating you like you know what you're doing.
so!, here is my list of things that will make you look like you're a runner.
nike lunarglide +2:
 obnoxious color? check
brooks long sleeve shirt:
brooks is like the snobby, bourgeois older brother of running brands.
pearl izumi split running shorts:
 the shorter, the better.

nike dri-fit featherlite running hat:
i've never not seen someone who looks cool while running wear  one of these hats
now, you know how to look like a giant, rail-thin naked bag of skittles while running.
finally, you also know why i've been training for this marathon by myself for 16 weeks.

*i hated baseball. my arms were as thin as rails and holding a baseball bat in batting position was a torture, but seriously. it was. zero upper body strength. still true.
** and by ice hockey, i actually mean ice skating lessons. ice hockey followed a year later, once i knew how to skate backwards and do tricks. totally serious. mini scott hamilton, for sure.
*** my mother took me gymnastics because i wanted to learn how to do "flips and stuff." yah, flips & stuff. on the first day of gymnastics class, they were teaching us how to do summersaults. pretty elementary stuff, but they wanted you to know how to perform one correctly. i'm pretty sure thats all we did for an hour. i responded with dismay, as any 8 year boy who wanted to learn how to do "flips & stuff" would. my mother replied with, "i'm not paying some teacher to teach you how to roll around on the floor like that, i can teach you that home."
but my mom never took me back. i forgot about it the following week, but she never taught me how to do a cartwheel. i think that summer we got a playstation instead.
**** basically, the same thing happened at the boy scout meeting. no camping, no tents, no lighting crap on fire. as a matter of fact, the only thing she ever taught me how to do involving fire, was how to light a cigarette and be a candle snob.
***** unless you're a cop, or a fire fighter, or something that requires a uniform.

september favorites 2010

i'm not sure if you're going to believe that when i was putting this together, i had to restrict the amount of neutral pieces in this---but i did. i swear, all i wanted to do was throw in grey cardigans, sport coats, shirts and shoes.
i'm going to try & do this each month, because 4 times a year seemed a little slim if i were going for seasons. enjoy. i don't own all of these items, just a couple or something similar that was thrifted.

eReader cases

let's just be honest here and say one of the major draws for wanting an ereader is for the purpose of carrying it around in a cool case. i mean, when you get something electronic you want to keep it nice & functioning, so why not outfit with something sharp looking. i'm not sure which ereader to get: kindle, nook, or ipad, however the decision will probably be determined upon which one has the coolest case.

we never had hard floors growing up, but we sure did need them. and i need this wooden case.

vers wood case for ipad

i am no longer a frat daddy or in college, but i still love me some patagonia.
Patagonia Kindle Case (Fits 6" Display, 2nd Generation Kindle)
by far my favorite color, jack spade released a dipped canvas case for the nook

jack spade new york dipped canvas for nook
customized monogrammed leather ipad case? yes please.
brown leather by julie boyles for ipad
a good ampersand case.
jonathan adler ampersand case for nook

manila envelope case? sure.

i've kind of made a vow not to carry a messenger bag, but i do like this timbuk2 case.
Timbuk2 Nylon Kindle Sleeve (Fits 6" Display, 2nd Generation Kindle) Black/GunMetal/Lime-Aide
visit the happy owl studio site to see how these flip open and have many organization options.

so, the clear winner is the ipad if going by cases. yet, how am i supposed to speed read on the ipad when the touchscreen does not have an option to turn off the page turning via finger scrolling.

song of the day | brandon flowers "crossfire"

while the band takes a break, brandon flowers, the lead man of the killers, gives it a go at his solo career.
the video is not very complex, or maybe im just too thick headed to understand.
but here is the story:
guy is trapped.
babe comes to save him.
babe fights off ninjas.
repeat.

my favorite songs of his new cd:

whats on your bookshelf? // fall 2010

the company they kept: writers on unforgettable friendships by silvers & epstein
i'm going to be honest. i bought the book because of it's cover. i never considered myself a literary connoisseur, but more of a lover of words. writers writing about friendships with writers, sounds like a bromance to me. i took enough english & literature courses in college that should have merited me at least an english minor. alas, i did not.

filson collaborations

filson has been up to some great things lately. and by great things, i mean since they were birthed and have been supplying hunters* and outdoorsmen with legit supplies.  filson has also done some rad collaborations.
filson x apolis activism
filson x levis

i've never been one to wear a pair of skate shoes or plimsols, particularly in obnoxious colors**. however, after seeing what filson did with vans. i might be more inclined to snag a pair. don't get me wrong i love a good obnoxious color and vans for sure provides that fix for some, but somedays, rather seasons, i prefer neutrals and natural tones.

* i don't actually know this from experience, but it sounded genuine when i rattled that sentence off. im sure my dad had a filson bag when he reluctantly took the reluctant me hunting. i usually sat on the tailgate of the truck, made sure the cooler was stocked full of beer at all times and colored with the coloring books.
**i just really don't like chunky white soles. or generally anything that requires upkeep. anything that isn't a white oxford that sits below my waist requires that i wash it/clean it/maintain it.

morton in purple scarf by symmetry

i swore i shed my hipster days of wearing intricate scarves & deep vees....but really i just dropped all of my deep v-necks off at a resale shop & called that the great exodus.
however, this is really great engineering. i love versatility & customization.
symmetry makes a "morton" scarf in purple & green & it's available over at needsupplyco.
this is one of those accessories that i think, "dang, i could totally make one of those." even though it's a women's scarf, i think it could be pulled off by a man with the flannel or a more masculine pattern. but really, what's more manly than flannel?

breakfast club

late start days in high school enabled most teenagers to sleep in and hit the snooze button. being the (not-so) cool group of us in high school, we saw this as an opportunity to hang out and eat breakfast before 7am on a school day.

we'd meet over at haley's house.
we'd make breakfast together.
we'd all go for a run or a bike ride.*

we really wanted to call ourselves the breakfast club. there were more friends in the breakfast club, but some didn't make the cut to fit the profile type for the movie poster. happy birthday kimmy.

*and by bike ride, i mean, we'd take our younger siblings razor scooters, joint friend tandem bike, roller blades, and trot around the neighborhood at an obnoxious hour on late start mornings each week.

friends

we did this for our dear friend allison's 17th birthday. i guess all of those hours spent tinkering away on indesign & photoshop in the journalism lab really paid off.

if there was any doubt that i was/wasn't cool in high school, this might (not) clear things up.

john derian for target

fact: target is awesome, but a super target is even more awesome.
dwell studio bedding, thomas o'brienliberty of london,
etc etc etc. it's a grand place.

also, how great are target's collaborations with designers?

john derian for target: collection at target

yes, please.
these were just released this past week in stores. i can't find the stationary that i ran into, but i swear it's rad. hives & animals.
